Peer pressure is the influence that people your age have on you. For us teenagers, it is the influence that other teens have on our behavior, the way we dress, our attitude and practices. Depending on who you surround yourself with, peer pressure can flexuate between good and bad. Positive peer pressure is when the overall change is for the better. Peer pressure is presented in many different ways. Wheither one is being verbally pressured by a peer, or if one is trying to follow the crowd to fit in, no matter how stressful the situation may seem, it can always be avoided.

Try these tips if you are struggling with peer pressure.

  1. Build self-esteem. Confidence within yourself is key in overcoming peer pressure.
  2. Know and respect your personal limits. Having a strong idea of what your goal are can help you refuse undesirable propositions.
  3. Choose your friends wisely. Surround yourself with people who genuinely care about you, accept you for who you are, and who will be less likely to try pressure you into something that you don't feel comfortable doing.
  4. Remind yourself about the possible negative consequences that can come from giving into peer pressure, such as loss of self-respect, strained relationships and trouble with authority figures.
  5. Trust your instincts. Base your decision-making on your own individual personality.
